Illinois Trial Lawyers Assn. Renames Headquarters After Corboy & Demetrio Co-Founder
The Illinois Trial Lawyers Association renamed its headquarters, the Philip H. Corboy Center for Justice, after the late co-founder of the Chicago law firm of Corboy & Demetrio, Phil Corboy. Sr., in 2013. Former Gov. Pat Quinn and Illinois Senate President John Cullerton were among those who gathered at the dedication ceremony in Springfield to honor Mr. Corboy whom the ABA has called the “Jack Nicklaus” of trial lawyers.
Philip Harnett “Flip” Corboy, Jr., a partner at Corboy & Demetrio, told the crowd of his father, “I was proud and happy to work with him for 26 years before his death. I had a chance to understand him not only as a father, but also as a lawyer.”
“I saw the dedication that he had towards this association, its members and, most importantly, to our clients,” Corboy said, adding that his father “reveled” in getting involved in the legislative process in Springfield. Phil Corboy, Sr. was President of ITLA from 1963-1964.

In 2009, the late Philip H. Corboy, and his wife, Mary Dempsey, made the largest single gift ever to the Loyola University Chicago School of Law. The gift will be used to support ongoing renovations of the law school building, new faculty hiring and student scholarships.
"My wife and I are privileged to support the law school’s mission to educate future generations of great lawyers for Chicago and our nation," Mr. Corboy said.
Loyola School of Law Dean David Yellen said, "There are very few living lawyers who have had the kind of impact Phil Corboy has. He largely transformed the practice of personal injury law. He’s been a teacher and mentor to a couple of generations of leading lawyers in the country."
"I received a magnificent education at Loyola’s law school that prepared me for a career representing brave and injured people and their families," said Corboy. "My continued involvement with Loyola is a result of my tremendous admiration for its commitment to teaching lawyers how to seek justice and how to help others."
