Chicago Double-Decker Bus Crash Lawsuit

On Jan. 27, 2024, a double-decker bus in Chicago struck an overpass as it was entering lower Randolph Street, shearing off its roof, and Corboy & Demetrio filed the first lawsuit in the crash on behalf of three injured passengers.

Corboy & Demetrio filed a lawsuit on Jan. 30, 2024, on behalf of three passengers who were seated on the second level of a double-decker sightseeing bus that crashed into an overpass in Chicago.

The plaintiffs, Bridget McKinley, Ciara McKinley, and Theresa McGuinness, were visiting from Northern Ireland and were enjoying the view from the second level when their bus struck a support beam on Jan. 27, 2024.

“The women were on a trip of a lifetime to have fun and take in the sights of Chicago. Instead, they watched in horror as the top of the bus was sheared off just above their heads,” said Corboy & Demetrio Partner Philip Corboy, Jr., who represents the women.

The lawsuit alleges that the owner of the bus should have known the bus was too tall to safely clear the overpass and that it failed to properly train its bus drivers or educate them on the hazards present on its bus routes.  The women are all suffering from emotional and psychological injuries.

This is the second double-decker bus crash in which Corboy & Demetrio has represented plaintiffs.

In 2014, the Corboy & Demetrio represented the estate of Cameron Chana, an Eastern Illinois University student who was riding in a double-decker tour bus in Mattoon, Illinois, in 2009, that went under an overpass, killing him and a second student.

Corboy & Demetrio has an extensive record of success in bus crash lawsuits.  Corboy & Demetrio served as Lead Counsel in the Fox River Grove Bus-Metra train collision in 1995 that killed seven students and injured several others. The Chicago personal injury law firm represented the estates of three students who died and seven others who were injured. The total settlement for all the cases exceeded $25 million.

The nationally renowned firm, which has verdicts and settlements of $4 billion, also obtained a settlement of $5.1 million against the charter bus company, Megabus, on behalf of the estate of a man who was struck and killed by a Megabus in Chicago in 2010. The firm obtained a $6.75 million settlement against Pontarelli Group Charters Inc. on behalf of the estate of Justyna Palka, who was struck and killed by a charter bus as she crossed a street in Chicago in 2011.
