Corboy & Demetrio Jointly Files Second Lawsuit on Behalf of Nevada Family Killed in Amtrak Crash

The Chicago law firm of Corboy & Demetrio and the Reno law firm of Bradley, Drendel & Jeanney have jointly filed a second lawsuit on behalf of the husband and grandfather of two victims who died in the recent Amtrak crash near Reno, Nevada.

The lawsuit was filed by a 71-year-old man of Seward, Nebraska, who lost his wife, 58, and granddaughter, 18, in the accident.   Both were riding in a passenger car when a truck crashed into the train on June 24, 2011.

The lawsuit, filed in Washoe County District Court in Reno, Nevada on July 6, 2011, alleges that truck driver Laurence R. Valli and his employer, John Davis Trucking Company, were negligent in disregarding lowered crossing gates and signals and crashing into the Amtrak train.

The granddaughter was traveling with her grandmother as part of a family trip and the teen was a survivor of kidney cancer.  According to Bradley Drendel & Jeanney lawyer Bill Bradley, “The family has been devastated by this tragedy and has asked us to represent and protect their interests.”

The grandfather who filed the suit and his deceased wife legally adopted five of their grandchildren, including the granddaughter who died in the crash and her four siblings in California in 2003.  The couple later moved the family to Nebraska.  The granddaughter’s four siblings include her 10-year-old brother and three sisters, ages 12, 14 and 17.

According to Corboy & Demetrio founding partner Thomas A. Demetrio, “The couple had already risen above all that could be asked of them when they legally adopted their five grandchildren.  Now, with the loss of his wife and granddaughter, the grandfather is left with the overwhelming responsibility of raising the other four children alone.”

The last mass transit accident case that Corboy & Demetrio lawyer Thomas A. Demetrio tried resulted in a record-setting $29.6 million dollar jury verdict in 2009 stemming from a Chicago Metra train crash.

Last week, Corboy & Demetrio jointly filed the first lawsuit in the deadly Amtrak crash on behalf of a 38-year-old Amtrak train attendant of Evanston, Illinois, who was injured in the Reno accident.
